What a day of excitement is was for us yesterday when our Giant Melaleuca Tree in the Reception area was finally removed. The process adopted was to spend the first day removing the Crown of the tree and attending to safety issues. On the second day, the Crane rolled in and was fastened to the main trunk just above the roof, to take the weight whilst cutting operations were carried out inside the reception area. Once the trunk was severed, the crane simply lifted the trunk through the ceiling.
The new date for removal of the diseased tree has now been set as 20th February...
Unfortunately our tree man has had an accident, and our Giant Melaleuca tree has had a brief reprieval. Removal date is being rescheduled for 13th or 20th Feb now.
Well, Australia day has been & gone - thousands turned up for a great mornings activity. Now the pressure is right back on preparing for major surgery on our building, through the need to remove one of our Giant Melaleuca Trees - refer our blog of 15th Jan 2012. We are still accepting entries of ideas on how to fill the void that will be left after this tree is gone - winner gets a free 5 night stay.
We will be closing this comp. off on "the" day the tree comes out.
Australia Day (Thursday 26th Jan 2012) starts in Palm Cove with a free Aussie Breakfast, right on the beach - directly in fron to Paradise on the Beach Resort. Then at 8:30am on there will be a band playing on the Northern side of Paradise on the Beach - in the Car Park in front of the Beach Club until 11:30am. Also at 8:30am the Mayor of Cairns, Val Scheir, will cut a giant Pavlova Cake (claimed by Australia as their national desert - NZers may disagree) on the steps to The Village shopping centre - on the Southern side of Paradise on the Beach.
Carrying on from our below Blog, responses we have had so far are:
1/ Make a lifelike plaster cast of the trunk, and replace it upon removal of the natural version.
2/ a life-size statue of someone in the space
3/ a water feature with potted plants etc.
4/ a large photo-board of guests having stayed.
5/ large cylindrical fish tank.
Love to get some more ideas?
Only 12 more days to 'removal day', when we'll decide the winner.
Of the World Heritage listed 5 Giant Melaleuca Trees growing through the building, an order has been issued for the removal of one due to contraction of Fungal Disease. This tree has been a feature of our reception lobby since the complex was constructed and will be sorely missed by management, staff & regular visitors alike. However it is necessary it goes before it infects the remaining trees around it and to eliminate the risk to patrons, staff & other pedestrian & vehicular traffic of falling branches etc.
